Officials at a Florida high school canceled a few games after what appeared to be a small sinkhole opened on the baseball field.
Local 6 has learned that both baseball games and softball games on Thursday night have been canceled at North Marion High School after a small hole was discovered near a sprinkler in left field.
Experts determined the 12-inch diameter hole resulted when a root ball from a long-ago cut-down tree rotted and disintegrated. The dirt above the root ball gave away, resulting in a hole about 5 feet deep, according to Marion County Public Schools.
The hole will be filled with dirt and the area will be re-sod, officials said.
