Jones High teacher accused of having sex with student on campus
Police say man had sex with student as many as 10 times on school grounds
Police say in the span of five months, a 58-year-old teacher at Jones High School had sex with a 16-year old student as many as ten times on school grounds.
Local 6 spoke with a different 16-year old Jones High School student who has Hugh Broomes, 58, as her English teacher.
She said he was her favorite until she heard about his arrest.
"It shocks me that there's a teacher like that at school, but I'm not surprised just disappointed in him," she said.
Police say Broomes now sits in the county jail on ten counts of sexual battery to a child.
"People kind of knew there was something more going on than a student-teacher relationship," said the student we spoke with.
According to the school's website, Broomes isn't just a teacher, but also a soccer coach, something that upsets Kenneth Ingram, a coach himself.
"They trust the coach, they leave that responsibility up to you and this makes them want to say teach soccer yourself," said Ingram.
While he surprised it happened at Jones High, Ingram said it's just one more thing to be on the lookout for.
"I think it's sad you can't even trust nobody who you leave your kid around," said Ingram.
