Lake Mary Police: Woman tried to cash $20K in fraudulent checks
Others sought in fraudulent check cashing ring
Lake Mary police arrested a woman who they say went to a Lake Mary bank and tried to cash two fraudulent checks totaling $20,000-but police say she wasn't alone.
Police said Kristal Spivey told them after her arrest she was part of a ring of people who came from Georgia to rip off unsuspecting people.
Spivey went to the BB&T bank off of Rinehart Road in Lake Mary on Thursday trying to cash the checks with an ID that had someone else's information and put her picture on it, according to police.
Police said tellers realized something was off and called police, who found and arrested Spivey in the bathroom of a nearby business after she took off running towards the woods.
Police are warning residents that other members of the fraudulent check cashing crew are still out there.
"The goal was for all of them to go out and do the same type of transaction and eventually get back meet back up together and split the proceeds and head back to Georgia," said Lt. Mike Biles of Lake Mary. "These people were staying in Volusia County again, according to her, so it's likely other areas Volusia were hit or going to be hit."
Spivey was booked into the Seminole County jail on $3,200 bond.
