NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -

A 24-year-old man was struck by a tractor-trailer and killed Sunday in a fiery wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 in Volusia County.

The man, whose name has not been released, was driving a Ford Fusion northbound in the southbound lane of I-95 at mile marker 253 near New Smyrna Beach when his vehicle was hit, the Florida Highway Patrol said.  It's not known why the man was driving the wrong way.

A tractor-trailer veered to miss the man's car, which struck another big rig head-on and burst into flames, troopers said.  The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

All southbound lanes were shut down for house because of the accident, causing traffic to back up on the interstate, troopers said.  The interstate reopened Monday morning.

The crash remains under investigation.
