TAVARES, Fla. -

A central Florida man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a hit-and-run pedestrian fatality.

A Lake County judge sentenced 27-year-old Steve Pegues on Monday after a jury found him guilty of leaving the scene of a deadly crash.

Authorities say 69-year-old Stephen Toner Sr. was out walking his dog in December 2010 when a blue pickup truck hit him and then drove away. Florida Highway Patrol tracked the vehicle down and linked it to Pegues.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Pegues apologized in court to Toner's family, but the family expressed disappointment that the sentence wasn't longer.
