FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. -

The wanted man who deputies say was shot by a Lake County deputy on Thursday after resisting arrest has been identified.

Lake County Sheriff's Office said they were called in by the Lady Lake Police Department for help searching for 24-year-old Jeremy Walker, who had three warrants out for his arrest: one for aggravated battery, one for attempted robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The shooting happened Thursday afternoon near Water Oak Drive, a dirt road, near Register Road in Fruitland Park. Deputies said they received information Walker was in an abandoned house on the street and when they went to arrest him, he resisted and was combative.

"They made contact with Walker in the front yard, they attempted to take him into custody at which point he actively resisted their efforts and was combative with the deputies," said Lt. John Herrell. "He was able to get into a parked car and he fled the scene, trying to run over one of our deputies in the process. At that point our deputy opened fire on Walker to defend himself."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is heading up the investigation.

Neighbors told Local 6 they were shocked to hear of the shooting.

"We know something was wrong because you don't hear that out here, this is the quietest neighborhood, you never even see the sheriff's ride through here or anything," said Jamie Teate, a neighbor who said she heard the shooting unfold.

"They led the police up here down this little dirt road and tried to hit the police with the car and the police opened fire on them," said neighbor Herman Dawkins.

Deputies said as of Thursday afternoon, the victim was still alive.

Deputies had the entrance to the road blocked off for hours as the investigation continued. No other details were immediately known.

The incident marks the third time in three days that Central Florida law enforcement officers have been involved in shootings.

Orlando police shot a man Tuesday night while investigating drug activity, and two men were shot -- one of whom died -- by Orlando police Wednesday night.
