Two Melbourne police officers were injured and hospitalized early Friday in a head-on crash, authorities said.

Both officers, riding in the same unmarked car, were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne with injuries to their extremities.

According to Melbourne police, the officers were on patrol around 2:15 a.m. on Aurora Road near Citrus Street when a Mercury Grand Marquis heading in the other other direction attempted to make a turn.

The driver, Thomas Chappelle, 23, of Melbourne, cut the turn short and the cars crashed head-on, police said.

The Florida Highway Patrol conducted an investigation and found Chappelle at fault.
