Mom sentenced to 8 years for 2009 abduction hoax
Woman stole $1 million, fled to Disney World
A Philadelphia-area woman has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for stealing $1 million, calling in a hoax carjacking and fleeing to Disney World with her young daughter.
Forty-year-old paralegal Bonnie Sweeten, of Feasterville, triggered a nationwide search in 2009 when she told a 911 operator she and her 9-year-old daughter had been kidnapped.
Authorities say she fled before an arrest for swindling her boss and an elderly relative. She spent a year in prison for the fake 911 call.
Sweeten told the judge before her sentencing Thursday she did what it took to pay for in vitro treatments, an upscale house and other luxuries.
