NWS: Small tornado caused damage to Viera subdivision in Sunday storms
National Weather Service records winds of 75 to 85 mph
The National Weather Service confirmed on Tuesday that a small tornado touched down in Viera in the severe weather that ripped through Central Florida on Sunday night.
Winds from 75 mph to 85 mph tore through a Colfax Landing subdivision near Stadium Parkway and Tavistock Drive on Sunday, NWS reports.
Damage to roof tiles, windows and pool screen enclosures were recorded by NWS, even though the tornado registered at the lowest rating on the Fujita scale, which ranges from 0 to 5.
Cocoa and Palm Bay also saw damage from the storm system that brought the tornado.
The severe weather prompted several tornado warnings, watches and severe thunderstorm warnings throughout Sunday evening. Branches were reported to be down in the roadway and pea-sized hail along with localized flooding.
Lightning from the storm also sparked a house fire in Baldwin Park.
