A brand new children's hospital treated its first emergency patient within hours of being open.
The young girl was a victim of a car accident and was taken by ambulence to Nemours Children's Hospital in Lake Nona this morning. She was treated for minor injuries and released.
The state-of-the-art Nemours Children's Hospital officially opened Monday at the Lake Nona Medical City in Orlando, just off State Road 417 near Orlando International Airport.
The hospital has dozens of patient rooms, along with cutting-edge medical equipment.
Months ago, parents actually helped interview and pick the doctors and nurses who would be working there.
Patients like 9-year-old Alyssa Vasquez, who traveled from Georgia with her mother to be treated for a leg condition, say the hospital doesn't feel like a hospital.
"It's fun and playful and very decorative," Alyssa told Local 6.
Nemours manager Barbara Meeks said the 8 a.m. opening started a celebration.
"Pretty much brought me to tears because that is why we are here," Meeks said. "We are here to help these children and their families get better in a very soothing environment."
Amy Vasquez, Alyssa's mother, says the hospital's unique setting makes her and her daughter feel at ease.
"The ability to stay in the room with the child made all the difference in the world," she said.
Nemours has about 750 employees working at the facility, but hopes to expand to 850 by the end of the year.
