THE DAY AFTER A SHOOTING TOOK THE LIVES OF 20 CHILDREN AND SIX ADULTS HERE, THIS COMMUNITY IS GRIEF-STRICKEN, AND SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS.
THERE ARE STILL MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT FRIDAY'S SHOOTING AT SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, BUT THE MOST COMMON ONE IS, "WHY?"
In these times of troubles and travail, when the unthinkable happens in our very midst, our faith is tested.
AS RESIDENTS OF NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT, CAME TOGETHER AT VIGILS FRIDAY NIGHT, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS CONTINUED TO WORK AT THE SCENE TO PIECE TOGETHER WHAT HAPPENED.
We consider an investigation like this is going to be massive. And number two, it's like a big puzzle. We got to put all the pieces together to draw a picture as to how and why this occurred.
AT THE CENTER OF THE PUZZLE, ADAM LANZA, THE 20-YEAR-OLD IDENTIFIED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS AS THE SHOOTER.
HE HAD NO KNOWN CRIMINAL RECORD BEFORE ENTERING THE SCHOOL FRIDAY MORNING, DRESSED IN BLACK FATIGUES AND A MILITARY VEST. HE WAS FOUND DEAD IN A CLASSROOM, APPARENTLY BY HIS OWN HAND.
A FORMER CLASSMATE WHO KNEW LANZA DURING HIS GRAMMAR SCHOOL YEARS DESCRIBED HIM AS QUIET.
He was always a little bit different. He mostly stuck to himself. I don't know if you can say you could have predicted this.
THE VICTIMS ARE BEING MOURNED ACROSS THE NATION, LIKE AT THIS CANDLELIGHT VIGIL AT THE U-S CAPITOL FRIDAY NIGHT.
BUT NOWHERE IS THE SADNESS MORE PALPABLE, THAN IN THIS SMALL COMMUNITY.
You really just struggle to find the words as to what happened.
