Volusia County deputies arrested the son of Orange City mayor Tom Laputka after they say he stole railroad beams from a local supply company to build a trailer.
21-year-old Oliver Laputka was charged with grand theft after he was spotted loading the steel beams from the CSX Railway into their truck on Crainleigh Avenue Tuesday afternoon, according to the deputy report.
Deputies caught up with Laputka and his accomplice, Brent Dobbs, at a Kangaroo gas station where the deputy saw two 20-foot steel railroad beams. When he was questioned, Laputka told deputies he only took the railroad beams to build a trailer and that they appeared to be disregarded so he felt it was OK to take them.
Laputka was on felony probation for burglary charges in April and was also charged with violation of probation.
Laputka and Dobbs were taken to the Volusia County jail.
