A new school zone has been enacted in Orange City to improve safety for students.

The new zone is on US Highway 17-92 at Rhode Island Avenue, covering 700 feet on US 17-92 and extend to the south and north of Rhode Island Avenue intersection.

The school zone will include 20 miles per hour—and will have flashing beacons and special signage indicating a school zone is present, according to a release.

Roughly $19,000 was budgeted for this project, which was put into effect by the Florida Department of Transportation, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the Volusia County School District, legislative partners and local government officials.
