Police say they had to use a Taser on a burglar and car thief who knocked on doors asking for gas money in a Eustis neighborhood.
According to authorities, Allen Haywood Summerall was arrested after he attempted to flee officers around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Eustis Police Department officers said they responded to the area of Clay Boulevard and Overlook Road regarding a complaint of a man walking up to homes and asking residents to give him money to buy gas. A resident contacted the department and provided a description of the man.
Upon responding to the area, an officer said he saw a red 2009 Cadillac CTS four-door matching the description of a stolen vehicle, which was reported stolen from Overlook Drive on Monday. The stolen vehicle was recently parked on Clay Boulevard and still warm, according to the officer.
Additional responding officers said they identified the man as Allen Haywood Summerall in the area of Overlook Road and Clay Boulevard. According to authorities, Summerall initially provided a false name. Officers said they confirmed there was a warrant out for his arrest in Lake County.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered Summerall was in possession of a Cadillac key fob belonging to the stolen vehicle, authorities said. Officers said Summerall attempted to flee the officers and they deployed a Taser to subdue him.
An inventory of items in the stolen vehicle included bedding, a shovel and a lamp. The vehicle and items were reported as stolen the day before from a residence on the 1200 block of Overlook Drive. The burglary report documented the unoccupied residence was entered after a subject threw a patio block threw the window, rifled through the residence and removed the items. A second set of keys to the stolen vehicle was also reported as stolen, authorities said.
Summerall was charged with burglary, grand theft motor vehicle, criminal mischief, escape, resisting a law enforcement officer without violence, and throwing a deadly missile into an unoccupied dwelling.
