HOLLY HILL, Fla. -

Two golfers rescued a woman who was attacked and stabbed by a Holly Hill man after she refused his romantic overtures, according to police.

Michael Anselmo, 64, was arrested on attempted murder charges in the Sunday attack, which occurred around 2 p.m. at 751 South Center Street near the Riviera Country Club.

According to Holly Hill police, Anselmo stabbed the 47-year-old woman once in the chest before trying to slash her throat after an argument over her rejection of Anselmo's request for a romantic relationship.  Police said the woman, who has known Anselmo for the last 10 years, cooked and performed household chores for him.

Two golfers at the country club witnessed the attack and came to the woman's aid.  One of the golfers held Anselmo at bay with a golf club while the other rendered first aid to her, police said.

"Thanks to the courageous actions of these individuals the victim was rescued from a vicious attack and almost certain death," Holly Hill Police Chief Mark Barker said.

The woman was taken to Halifax Health Emergency Department.  Her condition is not known.

Anselmo was arrested and taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail.
