ORLANDO, Fla. -

The 11th annual Crisis Intervention Team Appreciation breakfast was held in Orlando Friday morning hosted by Local 6 morning anchor Matt Austin.

Law enforcement officials and community leaders from Central Florida gathered at the Crowne Plaza Hotel this morning to honor Crisis Intervention Team or C.I.T. Officers of the Year.

Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney said he hopes to have every one of his officers trained in crisis intervention to help officers deal with the mentally ill. The training is aimed at giving law enforcement a new approach for dealing with mentally ill individuals.

Instead of confronting and arresting a person who shows signs of emotional distress, C.I.T. members are trained to direct the person instead of perhaps making an inappropriate arrest.
