Police investigates string of burglaries in Maitland
Neighbors: 'Burglar knows when we are not home'
Police investigates string of burglaries
Homeowners in the Winfield at Maitland Park neighborhood are asking for additional police patrols after a string a break-ins over the past month.
"I came home and discovered the power to my house was off, which is very uncommon," said the latest victim, Victor.
He said someone cracked a tiny hole through his back window on Thursday, peeled off the screen and once inside, took what they wanted.
Maitland police reports show there have been at least four break-ins in the neighborhood in a month.
Sherry Carlot was the first victim on December 2.
"It's very traumatizing," said Carlot. "Plus, you feel violated. These people have the time to be here because they ransacked every bedroom. They went through every drawer."
The burglar broke in through her window, too, but police said doors have also been kicked in. In most cases, the burglar took jewelry and electronics. Sometimes, the burglar used the homeowner's own pillow cases or boxes to carry off his loot.
What has neighbors worried is how much this burglar knows about his victims. They think he canvasses the neighborhood and knows when people are gone.
"Apparently these people have been looking and he know when people are at work," said Carlot. "We have an alarm system now, which we didn't then."
But alarms may not be enough. The burglar seems to know what he's doing. In at least two cases, he cut the power to the breaker box.
"You feel violated," said Victor. "You don't feel like you can trust your environment anymore and you have that apprehension when you're coming home -- you don't know what to expect."
