PORT ORANGE, Fla. -

Local 6 sat down with the Port Orange hate crime shooting victim on Friday and he says he forgives the shooters.

Kanwaljit Singh was driving home from the convenience store he owns. His 13-year-old son was in the passenger seat as they drove across the Dunlawton Avenue bridge just before midnight. Police say a truck pulled up and opened fire on the family.

Singh was shot twice. He's not expected to have any permanent damage from his injuries. His son was not injured.

Singh has been home from the hospital since Monday and is recovering but says he is still in a lot of pain from abdominal injuries.

Singh said he forgives the shooter and prays they won't hurt someone else.

"He forgives the person he has no anger toward the person that did this," said family friend Navtej Khalsa, who spoke for Singh. "He is quiet he keeps to himself people love him his customers love him. They really are shocked and surprised that someone would do such a violent crime against him."

Singh will take several months to recover, Khalsa said.

"We just hope whoever did this crime is not out there doing it to others as well," Khalsa said. "We have been deeply saddened and shocked by the shooting."

Khalsa said on behalf of the Sikh community that they hope someone can identify the suspect on the loose from the pictures/video Port Orange police released.

Police say since releasing those images they have gotten several tips and are following the leads.

Singh and Khalsa hope the incident serves to educate people about the kind nature of the Sikh community.

"People look at that and look at us as being different and not understanding who we are they might have some stereotypical or perceive us wrongly," Khalsa said.
