TAMPA, Fla. -

Officials at a Tampa zoo say they have a new pygmy hippopotamus.

The rare hippo was born Thursday at Lowry Park Zoo.

Zoo workers have been monitoring the female calf's mother, Zsa Zsa, and officials say the second-time mother appears to be exhibiting appropriate behaviors and nursing routinely.

The baby hippo was approximately 10 pounds and 20 inches long at birth. Pygmy hippos -- much smaller than Nile hippos -- average between 350 to 550 pounds as adults.

The zoo says there are only about 60 pygmy hippos in all of North America and fewer than 3,000 left in the wild. They're found in West Africa in lowland forests.
