TITUSVILLE, Fla. -

Guests at a Brevard County hotel Thursday morning were forced to leave their rooms when the building was evacuated because of smoke coming from a transformer.

More than 50 workers and guests were evacuated from the Econo Lodge Space Center at 3320 U.S. 1 in the area of S.R. 528 after a maintenance worker discovered smoke coming from an exterior transformer.

The worker said he was doing routine maintenance around the hotel when he noticed the smoke and called 911.

Firefighters from Brevard County Fire Rescue and Cocoa Fire Department evacuated the three-story hotel, and Florida Power and Light cut the power to the transformer.

Once power was disconnected, it was discovered that the cause of the smoke was overheating oil within the housing of the transformer.

Florida Power and Light will investigate the incident.

A fire inspector and a representative from the Florida Division of Hotels and Restaurants were also called to the hotel.
