Team sports can be great for a lot of things, like building confidence, leadership, camaraderie and health, but Local 6 investigates if children actually risk their health for the sake of competition.

Lauren Green is a sophomore star forward for her school and club soccer teams. Garrett Smith is a senior and participates in the football, lacrosse and weightlifting teams.

Both are regular student athletes who have injuries.

Lauren had a hip injury but with the latest techniques in hip surgery and rest for a few months, she was able to get back on the field.

Garrett won't be able to play football his senior year because of a posterior labrum tear in his right shoulder that he ignored. It was a nagging pain until a hit sent him to the hospital.

Dr. Reuss, an orthopedic surgeon, told Local 6 to switch up sports in order to protect your student athletes. Some sports cause more stress on certain parts of the body than others.

Reuss also says to take a weekend off and play for fun instead of a win.
