Teen with cancer meets Taylor Swift
Meeting pop star fulfills 15-year-old's dream before continuing treatment
A Lake Mary High School sophomore who's fighting bone cancer fulfilled her dream Thursday night by meeting pop icon Taylor Swift.
Not only was Alex Ramos, 15, made up like a princess and treated like royalty, but she was also front and center at Swift's sold-out concert before having to head back to Arnold Palmer Hospital on Friday for another round of intense chemotherapy.
"When something like this happens... I'll be able to look back on it and it just makes it all easier," said Ramos.
Making it all easier was the goal. Alex spent the day getting pampered from head to toe. Alex and her three best friends got their nails, hair and make-up done all before seeing Alex's first concert ever. She begged her mom for months to buy tickets.
"She's my baby, so watching her go through this is so hard," said Tricia Ott, Alex's mom.
Back in September, Alex was diagnosed with Stage 4 bone cancer. She was given just a 30 percent chance of survival.
Desperate for tickets to the sold-out concert, Ott turned to the Internet and found the organization, Friends Are By Your Side.
"Originally it started just to give women their dignity back," said Martino Cartier, founder of Friends Are By Your Side.
It's a nationwide network of hair salons, including The Look Salon in Oviedo, which provides handmade wigs to cancer patients for free and make dreams come true.
In addition to makeovers at The Look, Alex received a limo to the Amway, front-row seats and the surprise of her life.
"Tonight, before the concert starts..." Cartier told Alex. "You and your mom are going to meet Taylor Swift!"
"You're lying?" asked Alex in disbelief.
Alex received a private one-on-one meeting with Swift. Afterward, she was overcome with emotion.
Alex's chemotherapy on Friday is considered one of the more intense rounds. She is expected be in the hospital for at least a week.
On Monday, Alex will celebrate her 16th birthday. But for now, Alex's dream of meeting Taylor Swift has come true. That's what the teen plans to focus on in her battle against cancer.
