The tooth fairy is paying more in 2012 -- leaving an average of $3 under a child's pillow for each tooth, according to a new survey by Visa.

The 2012 average is up 15 percent from 2011, when the tooth fairy was forking over an average of $2.60 per tooth.

Visa researchers also found 18 percent of children get $5 from the tooth fairy, while 8 percent of kids get more than $5.

In 2011, Visa found 90 percent of kids received some form of payment from the tooth fairy when leaving a tooth under their pillows.

Along with the survey, Visa released a new Tooth Fairy Calculator app for iPhones and iPads.

The app allows the tooth fairy to enter in data to calculate how much to pay for a tooth. Data fields include:

• Gender
  
• Education
  
• State
  
• Age
  
• Annual Household Income
