Trial date set for downtown shooting spree suspect
A judge on Wednesday set a trial date for a man accused of a 2009 mass shooting in downtown Orlando.
Judge Belvin Perry ruled that the trial for Jason Rodriguez will tentatively begin March 12. Perry declared that Rodriguez was competent to stand trial, but a full competency hearing will be held in January.
Rodriguez, who did not attend Wednesday's court proceeding, is accused of going into his former employer's office and opening fire in November 2009. Otis Beckford was killed in the shooting.
In addition to a murder charge, Rodriguez faces five counts of attempted murder.
Rodriguez was fired by RS&H Architectural Engineering in 2007.
When asked about the shooting spree during his arrest, Rodriguez said, "they left me to rot."
Rodriguez had originally been ruled incompetent to stand trial.
