Victim: Fake cops tried to steal $1,000
An Orlando man said people posing as law enforcement officers tried to scam him out of $1,000, prompting a police investigation.
The victims said the scammers were well-dressed, both in suits, and professional-acting. The woman had a clipboard full of papers, and both had badges.
"I never saw the I.D. I just saw the badge," said Early Oliver, who said the pair knew his name and details about his life.
Around 10 a.m. Monday, the pair showed up at Oliver's front door saying they were with the Orlando Police Department's Special Investigations Unit and were investigating counterfeit bills. The pair said Oliver was already the victim of a scam -- by his own bank.
"They said the bank was giving out counterfeit bills," said Oliver.
But when they wanted to go to his bank and have him withdraw cash, that's when he knew they were the real scammers.
Here's how the scam worked, according to Oliver. The fake cops said someone at his bank was handing out counterfiet bills and they needed his help catching the criminal. They asked him to withdraw $1,000 to figure out who's giving out the bad bills. They even came with a fake $100 bill and when they rubbed it on a piece of paper the green ink came off.
Despite the elaborate scheme, Oliver caught on and never took them to his bank. They promised to come back and now he's worried who else they may target next.
"We just have to be on our watch," said Oliver.
The pair never came back and police said real detectives are now on the case.
