Volusia County man says thieves break into pen, steal pigs

PORT ORANGE, Fla. -

A Volusia County pig farmer said people are willing to anything to make ends meet in a tough economy, but stealing his livestock is a new low.

Deputies said John D'hondt of Port Orange reported one of his pigs missing on Thursday after he noticed his pig pen was broken into.

D'hondt said his pig was stolen sometime between Tuesday and and Wednesday afternoon. He told deputies he noticed his pig was missing when the pig pen door was open.

He had originally thought the pig escaped the pen, until he started searching for the pig and found fresh mud tracks that pointed to the pig being dragged away by its feet.

"You can see where they pulled it out of the ditch this way," Dhondt said.

D'hondt told deputies this is the third pig stolen from him in the past couple of years.

"Just how desperate are these people? Just how far are they willing to go?" Dhondt said.

Dhondt said he works three jobs to support his family and is frustrated by thieves coming in and taking what he's been working so hard for.

"It's disturbing when you work that much and come back and find out you're losing out because these guys are just helping themselves to you," Dhondt said.

Now he said he worries about the livelihood of his other livestock.

"There is one sow and six of her babies but now these guys are at risk," Dhondt said.

Dhondt is now considering putting cameras around his property and is taking extra security measures. He plans to press charges against the suspect who took his pig.

Deputies said there are no suspects or leads in the case.

If you have any information that could help deputies call the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
