Wendy's undergoes a customer service makeover

Wendy's says its image needs a makeover, starting with its customer service.

The old fashioned hamburger chain has been stuck behind McDonald's and Burger King in preference for years, but in 2010, Subway vaulted to No. 2 in fast food consumer choice, pushing Wendy's down to number four.

So as part of its company make-over, Wendy's plans to re-interview entire staffs, including managers, and keep only what they call "5-star workers."

John Sullivan, a fast food industry analyst and consultant, believes Wendy's is doing what is necessary in this tough economy.

"It's a bold move," said Sullivan. "Here we have a company that's at the bottom of its industry, an industry that's not particularly desired. And they're saying if you want to work with us you're going to have to be constantly learning."

Sullivan thinks Wendy's is listening to its customers. He warns all fast food restaurants better pay attention to service or they will lose customers almost instantly.

"Facebook now makes it easier. If you piss someone off, they don't even get out of their car," Sullivan said. "You are blasted thousands of people. So, no, that's why you need better quality."

Unemployment here in Central Florida well above the national average. Sullivan says he sees the day when someone will need a college education will be needed to get a minimum wage job.

"If you don't graduate from high school, and you don't continually learn, you probably won't have a job.

As ominous as that sounds, when an old-fashioned company like Wendy's decides it can no longer do "business as usual," expect its competitors to pay attention.

"It's truly a wake-up call. Your job is no longer secure," Sullivan said.

Wendy's has not announced a timetable for its customer service makeover.

The company may also change its look.  Right now, Wendy's is testing various new restaurant designs around the country featuring a fresh look with fireplaces and loft-style furniture.
