Wife of George Zimmerman arrested on perjury charge
Shellie Zimmerman, 25, booked and released from Seminole Co. Jail
Seminole County sheriff's deputies arrested the wife of George Zimmerman on Tuesday on one count of perjury.
Shellie Zimmerman, 25, was arrested at approximately 3:30 p.m. and brought to the Seminole County Jail-the same jail where her husband is being held on a no-bond status- on $1,000 bond, deputies said. She has posted bond and was released at 4:21 p.m, deputies said.
SCSO was contacted by investigators with the Office of State Attorney Angela Corey, 4th Judicial Circuit, who advised a warrant had been issued for Shellie Zimmerman, according to a release.
"On April 20, 2012, Shellie N. Zimmerman, did knowingly make a false statement, which she did not believe to be true, under oath in an official proceeding, to wit, The Bond Hearing of George Zimmerman," according to court documents.
Shellie Zimmerman told the court she and her husband were broke, resulting in Judge Kenneth Lester letting George Zimmerman out on $150,000 bond.
Prosecutors later found out Zimmerman had more than $120,000 and she knew about it. They obtained bank records showing Shellie Zimmerman transferred $121,000 among credit union accounts belonging to her, George Zimmerman and George's sister in the days before the April 20 bond hearing.
If convicted, Shellie Zimmerman could spend up to five years in prison. Her address and how she bonded out won't be released because it's protected, jail officials said. The only information known about Shellie Zimmerman's whereabouts is that she is living in Seminole County.
Shellie Zimmerman will be arraigned July 31 at 1:30 p.m.
Her arrest comes after Judge Kenneth Lester released his justification for revoking her husband's bond, in which he scolds George Zimmerman and his wife for "not properly respecting the law."
Mark O'Mara, who is representing George Zimmerman, released a statement about the arrest:
"Shellie Zimmerman was arrested on charges of perjury in an official proceeding, relating to her testimony at her husband George Zimmerman’s bond hearing. Mrs. Zimmerman posted a $1,000 bond and has been released from jail. As it will be a conflict for the O’Mara Law Group to represent Mrs. Zimmerman, she we will retain independent counsel."
George Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a confrontation in a Sanford gated community where Zimmerman lived. He's pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense.
George Zimmerman is being held at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility pending his second bond hearing on June 29 because he didn't correct his wife's testimony during his first bond hearing. Prosecutors also found out he had a passport he didn't turn in to authorities.
