Woman shoplifted from DeLand Walmart, hid with 2-year-old daughter, deputies say
Volusia County deputies arrest Shaylynn Suckel on several charges
A 22-year-old woman accused of shoplifting from a Walmart in DeLand ran from an off-duty deputy while carrying her 2-year-old daughter and was later found hiding with the child, police said.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports that Shaylynn Suckel, of South Daytona, was found with the toddler under metal sheets outside a nearby business. The girl had several minor cuts, police said.
Police said Suckel hid some baby merchandise in her purse and walked out of the store. A Walmart employee tried to stop her and asked an off-duty deputy for help, leading to the chase, police said.
Suckel faces charges of an act that could result in the physical or mental injury of a child, obstructing an officer without violence and petty theft, a DeLand police arrest report shows.
The child was turned over to the Department of Children & Families, police said.
Suckel was released Wednesday from the Volusia County Branch Jail after posting bond.
