Amazon launches new service for "Kindle kids"

Subscription includes games, videos, and books

ORLANDO, Fla. – Amazon announced on Wednesday the launch of Kindle FreeTime Unlimited, a subscription service for games, videos and books aimed at kids using its Kindle Fire tablet devices.

The service offers children unlimited access to content, including educational apps, movies and TV shows from Disney, Nickelodeon, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, PBS, and Sesame Workshop, among others.

Kindle FreeTime Unlimited is an optional extension to Kindle FreeTime, a free feature on the new Kindle Fire family, which re-invents parental controls and offers parents new tools like Time Limits, which helps parents manage their kids' screen time.  Parents can set up profiles for each child so that kids can browse age-appropriate videos, games and books without being shown ads or accessing the Internet.

"FreeTime Unlimited is designed to make FreeTime even better for parents and kids," Amazon said in a press release today. "Kids can follow their own imaginations across books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows without being dependent on help from mom and dad."

FreeTime Unlimited is not free.  The service will cost $4.99 per child each month, though members of Amazon Prime, the company's premium shipping service, can get it for $2.99 per month.  Family plans for up to six kids are available at $9.99 per month, $6.99 for Prime members.
