America's best airlines announced in annual Forbes report

Virgin America, Jet Blue lie atop list

Lots of people know Virgin America for its unique safety commercial, or the recent viral video of the cast of "The Lion King" singing, but now Virgin America is making news for different reasons.

According to the 2014 Airline Quality Rating report, an annual study of airline performance, Virgin America is the highest-quality major airline in the United States for the second consecutive year.

The privately owned airline –founded by billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson– has only been operating in the U.S. since 2007, and has come out on top both times it has been included in the AQR's analysis, Forbes reports.

According to Forbes, the Airline Quality Rating report is the premier statistical study of major airline performance in the United States, and has been conducted annually since 1991.

On-Time Arrivals: 82.1%
Denied Boardings: 0.04 per 10,000 passengers.
Mishandled Baggage: 0.97 per 1,000 passengers.
Customer Complaints: 1.28 per 100,000 passengers.

#2 Jet Blue
On-Time Arrivals: 74.4%
Denied Boardings: 0.01 per 10,000 passengers.
Mishandled Baggage: 1.91 per 1,000 passengers.
Customer Complaints: 0.63 per 100,000 passengers.

#3 Hawaiian Airlines
On-Time Arrivals: 93.3%
Denied Boardings: 0.17 per 10,000 passengers.
Mishandled Baggage: 2.25 per 1,000 passengers.
Customer Complaints: 1.06 per 100,000 passengers.

#4 Delta Air Lines
On-Time Arrivals: 84.5%
Denied Boardings: 0.57 per 10,000 passengers.
Mishandled Baggage: 2.19 per 1,000 passengers.

#5 Alaska Airlines
On-Time Arrivals: 87.2%
