Apopka man, 75, dies after pickup hits tree

Richard Groover killed in Orange County crash

APOPKA, Fla. – A 75-year-old Apopka man died Thursday night after his pickup struck a tree, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The FHP said Richard Groover died at Florida Hospital Apopka after the crash, which occurred around 7 p.m. near the intersection of Ponkan Road and Junior Avenue in Apopka.

According to troopers, Groover was driving a 2005 Dodge pickup and exiting a private driveway on Ponkan Road when he lost control on a wet road.

The pickup traveled onto the south shoulder and the pickup struck a tree, troopers said.

Groover was taken to the hospital and later died, the FHP said.

Groover was not wearing a seat belt, the FHP said.

An investigation is ongoing.
