Woman wants drivers to slow down after car flips in Apopka neighborhood

Teen charged in DUI crash

APOPKA, Fla. – Apopka mother Samantha Lovejoy was feeding her newborn Sunday morning when she heard a crash. She looked out the window and saw a car flipped upside down on her road Lake Francis Drive.

"The car was flipped right next to the mailbox," she said, pointing to a brick mailbox knocked horizontal on the ground. "I mean, I had chills all over my body and my husband, I think he saw the girl crawl out of the car."

Lovejoy said it wasn't the first time this has happened in her Errol Estates neighborhood.

"At the other end of the road, there was another car that flipped and hit a trailer in the road," she said.

She believes speeding is to blame.

"It's ridiculous," Lovejoy said. "I mean cars fly down here, they cut from Zellwood-Sorrento to get to Apopka."

So this mother wants to get results.

Right after Sunday's crash, she emailed the Apopka police traffic sergeant and Monday morning woke up to the sound of radar guns. She said she's thankful she got results and got police to crack down on speeders.

"They sat right here in my driveway and I saw three cars pulled over," she said.

Apopka police confirmed they had officers patrolling for speeders Monday.

However, Lovejoy wants something more permanent like speed bumps. News 6 contacted every city commissioner, the mayor and the vice mayor about whether they would look into the issue.

City Councilman Doug Bankson sent News 6 the following statement:

"One of the difficulties is the multi-jurisdictions, as we have many pockets of county roads and city roads intermingled," Bankson wrote. "I am not sure off hand if that is the case in this instance, but I'm sure our staff will look into it."

As for the driver of the car that flipped, Apopka police believe speed was a factor in the crash and said the 19-year-old woman was arrested on charges of DUI with property damage.
