Arrested teachers aides reassigned after classroom fight

School board votes against suspension

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Two teacher's aides arrested after a fight inside their Kissimmee classroom will not be suspended from their jobs.

By a 3-2 vote, the Osceola County School board voted against the suspension Tuesday night. The board instead voted to reassign the aides with pay until the investigation into what happened is complete.

Kristie Gilmore and Mona Sagar were arrested on child neglect charges last week after a fight broke out inside their classroom at Discovery Intermediate School. Investigators say the aides did not intervene or try to get help after several students started fighting and throwing chairs.

Gilmore and Sagar both spoke to the school board Tuesday night. Sagar said there was often trouble in their classroom and said school administrators didn't always respond to calls for help. Sagar also told the board by the time she was able to reach the radio, the fight had ended. Gilmore meanwhile said she was afraid of what the students were capable of and didn't want to put herself in danger.

Three students were also arrested after the fight.

The family of the victim said Monday that it will potentially sue the district because of what happened.
