Attorney for gay Florida teen wants judge to step down

Kaitlyn Hunt charged with lewd battery over relationship with 14-year-old girl

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The attorney for a Florida teen charged with a felony for having sexual contact with her underage 14-year-old girlfriend is asking the judge to remove himself from the case.

Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, was charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a child in February. Her family says police and the younger girl's parents secretly recorded a phone conversation in which the girls discussed kissing in the school bathroom.

Circuit Judge Robert Pegg recently set a trial date for September. Attorney Julia Graves filed a motion Monday alleging the case is being singled out because a trial was set before more than 200 other criminal cases and the date is premature.

Gay rights advocates to say Hunt is being unfairly targeted for a common romance because she's gay.
