Autopilot issue prompts flight to return to Orlando Sanford International Airport

Plane heading to Concord, N.C., returns to Sanford

SANFORD, Fla. – A spokesperson with Allegiant Travel said a flight returned Friday night to Orlando Sanford International Airport because of an issue with the plane's autopilot.

Flight 638, an MD-80 aircraft, took off from the airport for Concord, N.C., at 7:16 p.m. Friday.

Shortly after takeoff, the pilots reported an issue with the autopilot and requested to return to Orlando Sanford International Airport, where the plane touched back down at 7:58 p.m., officials said.

The plane was then set for re-departure at 10:30 p.m. Friday.

No other details were provided.
