WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. – A three-month-old baby was rushed to Arnold Palmer Hospital with first-degree burns to his face and arms after a fire broke out at a home in Winter Springs.
The fire broke out around 4:45 p.m. Thursday at a home on San Gabriel Court.
"(The baby) was in stable condition when they left (the home) and upon arrival (at the hospital) he had shown some improvement," said Dorrie Forrest, a spokeswoman for Seminole County Fire Department.
Forrest said the intense heat from the flames gave the baby injuries similar to a severe sunburn and he suffered first-degree burns to 9 percent of his body.
Five people were inside at the time including three children, ages 5, 3 and 3 months. Forrest said everyone else made it out safely.
The State Fire Marshal was called in to investigate the cause, but firefighters believe a grease fire on the kitchen stove sparked the blaze.
"Luckily, that mother had made sure the child was far away from the stove or he probably would have suffered some severe injuries," said Forrest. "Approximately 20 percent of the house was damaged by fire and the rest has smoke damage throughout."
The Red Cross was called to help the family find a place to stay.
