PALM BAY, Fla. -

Palm Bay police say a whirlwind of rumors and Facebook posts about alleged threats to harm students at Bayside High School are unfounded.

Local 6 news partner Florida Today reports police and Brevard Schools officials say the rumors circulating on the social media page cannot be traced to one student, and may be related to a suspicious item found at the school on Wednesday.

“(Police) have worked with our administration and indicated that they have thoroughly investigated this and have not found substantiated allegations,” BPS spokeswoman Michelle Irwin told Florida Today. “On Wednesday, an item was reported as looking suspicious at Bayside High School. As a precautionary measure it was investigated and it was found to be innocuous.”

Palm Bay Police Lt. Greg Latulippe told Florida Today rumors began spreading among students on Facebook about a student connected to the suspicious item.

Latulippe said the rumors were “about a shooting to occur at Bayside High School," which is located in southwest Palm Bay.

Officers working late Thursday talked to the student connected to the suspicious package and others involved in spreading the social media posting and determined any alleged threats were “completely unfounded,” he said.

Police are taking precautions at the school nonetheless.

“We have our school resource officer out there, and we’re having our patrol officers stop by between calls,” Latulippe said.

Irwin said an investigation is ongoing related to the student who may be connected to the suspicious package, and that student may be disciplined.
