Big rig driver dies in fiery crash on I-75 in Florida

WILDWOOD, Fla. – A 63-year-old man died Tuesday morning when his tractor-trailer crashed and caught fire on Interstate 75 in Sumter County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The Orange Park man, whose name has not been released, died in the crash, which occurred on I-75 north near mile marker 328 in Wildwood.

According to troopers, the driver traveled onto the shoulder for an unknown reason and the big rig crashed into some trees.  The tractor-trailer, which was empty, erupted in flames, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the FHP said.

All northbound lanes were closed for several hours as authorities conducted an investigation.  The interstate reopened before 2 p.m.  As an alternate route, motorists can use exit 309 and head east on County Road 673, then north on U.S. 301 and west on State Road 44.
