Blue Rhino back to full operation after explosions rocked Florida propane plant

8 injured in Lake County fire

TAVARES, Fla. – Blue Rhino, a propane plant in Tavares, has resumed full operations, several months after explosions rocked the plant when a fire broke out in a storage yard, city officials confirmed Monday.

Stacks of propane cylinders used for backyard barbecue grills returned to the plant last month, but Blue Rhino employees are now also refurbishing and refilling the 20-pound tanks at the plant off County Road 448.

When asked last month about any changes, company spokesman Scott Brockelmeyer told Local 6, "The Blue Rhino tanks at our facility in Tavares, Florida, continue to be stored according to National Fire Protection Association guidelines."

Eight people were injured in the blast, including several who suffered critical burns. All have been released from the hospital.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is conducting an investigation into any workplace safety violations.
