Bodies of man, woman found along Volusia County road

Police say 2 dead in apparent hit-and-run on SR-44

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Authorities are investigating what events led to a man and a woman being found dead along the side of a Volusia County road.

Police said the bodies of Savannah Jo Dejarnette, 26, and Zachary Tyler Kahle, 24, were found along eastbound lanes of State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach just after 11 p.m. Tuesday in an apparent hit-and-run crash.

Dejarnette's vehicle was found just west of Interstate 95 and police say they believe the duo left the car and were walking east of SR-44 when they were struck by an unidentified vehicle.

Police said the driver of the vehicle left the scene. The vehicle is described as having front end damage and possibly a broken right front headlight.
