Body of missing boater found

Deputies find body of missing canoeist

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Deputies said they found the body of a missing woman from a boating accident just before noon on Sunday.

Orange County firefighters were called to Lake Pickett around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to deputies, two men and a woman were fishing on the lake when their canoe capsized.

Brian and Vincent Farina made it back to shore, but the woman, later identified as 22-year-old Shelly Stirman, went missing.  Her body was later recovered.

Tina Wheeler lives on the lake and heard the woman screaming before she disappeared.

"I grabbed my husband and we went out and pulled two guys in, of course they were upset -- missing one boater, and we tried helping as much as we could," Wheeler said.

Orange County deputies joined in the search by air, locating the overturned canoe in the water and debris that was inside, including the woman's purse, but divers and searchers were unable to find the woman on Saturday.

After an extensive search Sunday morning using dive teams and sonar, they were able to find the body of the woman.

Deputies said the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.
