ORLANDO, Fla. – An 9-year-old fired a gun inside a closet at the home of an Orlando police officer Monday morning, but no one was injured, officials said.
Orlando police said the 9-year-old was visiting the residence of Officer Thomas O'Day and wandered into the master bedroom, where he found the Diamond Back .380-caliber handgun in the closet and fired one bullet into the wall.
The boy, who police identified as the son of O'Day's girlfriend, was not injured.
A review will be completed, which is protocol with an incident involving an OPD employee.
The gun involved was a personally owned gun and not one belonging to the department, police said. O'Day has been employed with the department since 2000.
Police said the child was visiting the residence and the fact that they were able to find the gun was unforeseeable, citing a Florida Statue, which kept the officer from being arrested or charged.
