Boy running for homecoming queen in Lake County

17-year-old male student nominated for homecoming queen

CLERMONT, Fla. – It's homecoming season and that means hundreds of teenagers across Central Florida are hoping to be crowned queen or king of their high school.

But things may not go the traditional route in one Lake County school, where a male student is hoping to become queen.

A 17-year-old student has been nominated for homecoming queen for the first time in Lake County.

Dillon Gleeson is a senior on the swim team at East Ridge High in Clermont, but could soon add the title to his resume.

"He's outgoing, he's loved by a lot of his, he's a good person, really friendly, eccentric and he's funny," Amanda Casey, a senior, told Local 6. "I think it's awesome that he's running, but I think he should have ran as king because it gives the girls who are seniors a chance to win queen."

Parents had mixed feelings about it.

"I think its great. Times are changing and if the kids are good with it, why not?" said Eileen Adams.

But Ann Ambrose, a parent with twins at the school, disagrees.

"It doesn't seem right, it doesn't seem right. Guys are kings and girls are queens," said Ambrose.

Gleeson may pave the way for another student, a girl at Lake Minneola High who is running for homecoming king.

The king and queen will be announced Friday at East Ridge. Lake County school board member Tod Howard said the decision of who can run for king or queen is up to each school. He said the school board will stay out of it.

Howard also told Local 6 he received one complaint Wednesday about it from a parent.
