Police said a 16-year-old boy was driving south on Rivera Drive with his mother when the 8-year-old boy ran out in front of the car and was struck.

Officers arrived and rendered medical aid before the boy was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver stayed at the scene. Police said traffic homicide investigators do not think charges will be filed.

"The 16-year-old driver is licensed and was traveling legally down the street with a parent in the front seat," traffic homicide investigator Jeff Reardon said.

Riviera Drive was expected to be closed for several hours while the crash was investigated.
