A man was arrested on murder charges Friday in the shooting death of his girlfriend in Brevard County.
Dennis Aviles II was arrested on charges of second-degree murder, providing false information to police, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and destruction of evidence.
Cocoa police said Tahnika Michelle Duppins, 32, died in the shooting, which occurred Friday morning at 565 Johnston St.
Police said Aviles initially said that two men entered the home and shot Duppins during a botched drug-related robbery. Police said Aviles' story didn't add up, however, and he became a person of interest in the fatal shooting. He was arrested hours later.
Investigators said they recovered a handgun, but it's not yet known if it was the one used in the shooting.
Duppins was the mother of a 12-year-old girl, who's now staying with her grandmother.
Emma Jewel Charter School and McNair Elementary School were placed on lockdown at 8:08 a.m. as police searched the area after the shooting. The lockdowns were later lifted.
