Brevard County brush contained after burning near homes, day care

200-acre fire ignited after van fire on I-95 in Palm Bay

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Firefighters say the 200-acre brush fire, which sparked from a van fire on Interstate 95 on Wednesday,  is 100 percent contained on Thursday.

The brush fire ignited in the area of Babcock Street and Waco Boulevard as a result of a van fire on I-95 around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Country Beginnings day care on Babcock Street was evacuated and residents near the fire were asked to evacuate as a precaution.  Multiple parks were also closed in the area.  The day care, roads and parks all reopened later.

Late Wednesday, firefighters asked homeowners to watch for more flares-ups after a brush fire burned dangerously close to dozens of homes in Brevard County. Officials say they are in the process of bringing in bulldozers to knock out most of the ground fires.

Brevard County Fire Rescue says a handful of callers overnight reported hot spots near their homes. Fire Rescue says Florida Forest Service units were helping to mop up the brush fire. Small flare-ups were reported near I-95.

No structural damage was reported.

The stench from the fire blew into the Orlando area Thursday morning.

Local 6 news helicopter Sky 6 flew over the fire as flames burned next to Adil Agosto's home, sending heavy clouds of smoke into the air.

"My family's just visiting here and they were very concerned," said Agosto. "I thought that the house was burning because I couldn't see the house. I couldn't see it very well because of the smoke."

Winds were estimated to be blowing in the area at around 30 mph, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze as it cut through trees and brush.

I-95 was shut down near Malabar Road in Palm Bay for more than an hour because of the blaze.  Several other roads were closed down in the area, including Babcock Street and westbound on Valkaria.
