Missing boy found dead in Brevard County pond ID'd

Deputies: Family member became separated from 4-year-old

VIERA, Fla. – Authorities identified on Wednesday the 4-year-old boy who was found dead in a pond near his Viera home after being reported Monday missing hours earlier.

Deputies said Kyre Bailey, 4, died of drowning and that the autopsy showed no signs of trauma.

"We responded in full force with our aviation unit and our dive team because of the logistics of the area," Brevard sheriff's Cpl. Dave Jacobs said. "Our sheriff's K-9 unit and a lot of available resources were used to help locate the boy."

Kyre was found dead around 5 p.m. in the water near his home where a family member had been watching him.

No one has been charged in the death of the child as officers look into the circumstances of the incident, which took place on Ayrshire Circle in the Chelford subdivision near Manatee Elementary.

Most of the houses in the neighborhood are backed by canals and ponds. Some of the yards are surrounded by fences, but many are not.

Sidney McKeel has been living in a nearby subdivision since 2008 and was walking with his wife as police, news crews and neighbors in golf carts stood outside the gated community, News 6 partner Florida Today reported.

"It's sad that our neighbor is hurting right now," McKeel said. "I don't care what people think, but we all take care of our kids the best we can. It would be nice to know what the nature of this problem is or what caused it, so we can prevent this from happening again."

McKeel said that he and his neighbors who choose not to have fences do so in order to maintain an unobstructed view of the water that snakes through the development.

"Our heart goes out to the family members. It's a terrible tragedy," Jacobs added during a news conference.
