Brevard student arrested after bringing gun to middle school, cops say
Deputies say 15-year-old Hoover Middle School student had gun in backpack
Brevard County deputies have arrested a 15-year-old student after they say the student brought a semi-automatic handgun to school in his backpack.
The Hoover Middle School student was arrested on campus Wednesday after officials received an anonymous tip from the parent of another student that the teen was carrying a weapon.
BCSO deputies said the student was arrested before school, the moment he walked onto campus.
School administrators searched his backpack and discovered the gun was not loaded, and he did not have any ammunition, said deputies. However, the incident was enough to alarm authorities and his neighbors.
"I was shocked. He's a good kid. He's a good friend of my son's," said Cindy McCarthy, who has known the teen his entire life. "They're a wonderful family. They go to church a lot. They would do anything for anybody in this neighborhood."
McCarthy said she has never known the family to have guns in the home, but authorities are still working to determine how the teen gained access to the gun and what motive he had for bringing it to school.
Local 6 is not naming the student because he is a minor.
The student has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property and carrying a concealed firearm. Deputies took the student to the Brevard County Juvenile Detention Center.
The investigation is ongoing.
