Brother, sister killed on way to school in Polk County, officials say

Southbound trafficlanes will be closed for several hours on US Hwy 27

A brother and sister who attended Frostproof High School were killed early Friday morning on their way to school, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The 18-year-old male and his 15-year-old sister, who were in a Jeep Liberty, were on Princeton Avenue when they heading east on U.S. Highway 27 heading north towards high school.

As they Jeep crossed the southbound lanes, it was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was carrying three men.

The men in the pickup truck were taken to the hospital.

Officials said the men are expected to survive.

The crash remains under investigation.

Grief counselors will be at school to offer support to students at Frostproof High school, officials said.

Southbound lanes on U.S. Highway 27 will be closed for several hours and traffic will be rerouted to Otto Polk Road.

The northbound lanes are open.

The names of the victims have not been released.
